Anti-FGM legislation dropped in Yemen

Yemen - Attempts to make FGM an illegal practice through an article in a new “safe motherhood law” have failed in Yemen. The part on FGM was dropped from the draft legislation by request of the conservative majority, who argued that it “included inappropriate and shameful sentences” and that FGM was “not a common practice in Yemen”, making the law unnecessary.

According to statistics from the FGM network, around 23% of women in Yemen are victims of FGM.
