A woman, who practiced FGM on about 50 girls, has been arrested in Tarime, Tanzania.
Rhobi David, popularly known as Ng´ariba, is about 68 years old and originally from Ingwe, Myanmar (Burma). After being questioned about the FGM of young girls by the police, she will be taken to court.
During November and December last year, 53 girls left their home to attend the “Alternative FGM education” at the Rogoro Roman Catholic Parish in the village of Masanga. However, when they returned to their families, they were forced to undergo FGM. Those who didn´t want to be mutilated, weren´t allowed to continue with their studies.
The NGO “Save Children in Tanzania” (SACHITA) tries to fight against FGM but also helps orphans in this region. Peter Mwera, the President of SACHITA points out that arresting Ng´aribas won´t solve the problem. The people must be made aware of FGM and its effects on young girls.
