Fight against FGM continues in Kenya

According to Kenya’s gender Minister Esther Murugi, FGM continues to be practiced by 37 tribes in Kenya, ten years after it was abolished and despite the negative social consequences (early marriage and school dropout) and serious health risks.
Earlier this month, 600 schoolgirls collectively fled their upcoming mutilation, finding refuge with a Christian diocese, where they performed an alternative rite of passage. This practice allows the continuation of tribal traditions without violating the girls’ human rights.
Another project in Kenya seeks to provide employment for circumcisers willing to give up the practice by giving them cettle. The first generation of heifers was recently passed on to women willing to stop practicing FGM.
